What is Human in the loop?

A plain definition for small teams.

Short answer

Human in the loop means a system is designed so that a person takes part in its decisions, for example by reviewing, correcting or approving what an AI produces. In an answer bot, it means a person approves the answers and handles the questions the bot cannot answer.

How it is used in AI

In machine learning, people help a model learn by choosing which examples matter most. In conversational systems, a difficult exchange can be passed to a person when it needs judgment or empathy that a machine may lack.

What it looks like for a team bot

A person approves each answer before the bot may use it. When no approved answer exists, the question goes to a named person, and the answer they write becomes the approved answer for next time. The person stays responsible for what the bot says.

What it does not mean

Having a person in the loop does not make every answer correct. It means there is a place where someone checks and a person to hold accountable. Pair it with source and date on each answer and with regular tests.

Common questions

  • Not necessarily. It can mean approving the answers a bot may use, handling questions it cannot answer, or both, rather than reading every reply as it is sent.

  • Because a wrong answer about a refund rule or a price can be acted on, and the company is responsible for what its bot says.
