A simple team FAQ template for startups (copy it)

A practical, copyable template for the document that answers your team's repeat questions: what to include, how to word each answer, and how to keep it current.

A good team FAQ is short, dated and owned. It does not try to describe the whole company. It answers the questions people keep bringing to the founder, in a form people can trust. Here is a template you can copy today.

The format for every answer

  • Question: written the way a teammate would ask it.
  • Answer: one to three plain sentences. Numbers written out.
  • Status: decided, or only planned. Never mix the two.
  • Owner: the person who updates it when it changes.
  • Last confirmed: a date.

The sections to start with

  • What we do: one sentence on what the company does and for whom.
  • What we are focused on this quarter, and what we are deliberately not doing.
  • Pricing and discounts: the price, the lowest allowed, who can approve more.
  • What we can promise customers today, and what we cannot.
  • Who owns what: a short list of areas and the person responsible.
  • How we handle a customer problem: the first three steps.
  • What a new person should read or do in the first week.

How to word an answer well

Start with the answer, then the reason. 'Our lowest price is X, because below that we lose money on support' is better than a paragraph that arrives at X in the end. If an answer depends on something, say what: 'For annual plans, Y.'

Keep it alive with one weekly habit

Once a week, spend ten minutes on the questions that reached you anyway. For each, either the answer was missing, or it was wrong, or people did not trust it. Fix the cause and update the date. In a month the document reflects what your team actually asks.

A rule for what you do not know

Add one line at the top: if the answer is not here, ask the founder, and it will be added. That turns every gap into a new answer instead of a repeated interruption.

When you want it in a conversation

A document is the right place for answers to live. A conversation is how people prefer to ask. AskMyStartup lets you turn your answers into an AI clone your team can chat with, in your voice, which only answers from facts you approved and says when it does not know. It is in private beta, and the waitlist is open.
